The impression I got from this year’s Rails Conf in
Portland, OR from the core Rails team was “Rails is not holding our interest anymore, so we will just go through the motions and see what happens”; people were pretty jazzed about Merb though. The writing was on the wall. The core team needed a kick in the pants or they were going to need to sign up for the Merb Conference next year instead of the Rails Conf. Seems like this was a kick in the pants they needed. Good for Yehuda and Matt, I hope they do not become like what DHH is today. I am pretty shocked that the Rails team did this. I took them for arrogant a-holes who could not see genius (ahem, Yehunda) if it built another ORM for a rails-like app and stole half their base ;)

Thanks for the fix. Have you submitted it yet to the prototype team?

I modified the example to work with IE 7. We encountered the same problem after cross-browser testing. The major difference is the call to Position.prepare()

I would like to get this story on tape, aka in the Gangplank podcast studio. And let’s talk about E-Prime during the podcast too, I think I have broken free now and can talk about it now. This should be good. steve@jumpbox.com

“No clobbering software” does not appear in the RoR Bible. If it existed anywhere it would most likely appear in the Systems/Network administration bible.

For brevity I didn’t want to go into the specific details of virtual appliances and their respective context in a full IT environment. In my experience, larger IT organizations attempt to provision hardware with a “one box, one task” mentality. Unfortunately, sometimes a need comes up that necessitates software becoming available immediately without waiting for the tasks of provisioning/deployment. The danger of simply adding that software to another machine ranges from no-impact to possibly damaging shared libraries and bringing the entire box down. Virtual appliances provide a quick “drop load”-like functionality that functions essentially like adding a full-fledged machine onto the network immediately without violating the one-box-one-task compartmentalization approach. So no software clobbering needs to occur.

I thoroughly enjoy that even the comments follow the E-Prime rules. :-)

Chris,
Can you tell me if “No clobbering software” appears in the RoR bible? As the marketing guy here at JumpBox now I must learn how to speak to users.

Curtis,
That link to E-Prime cost me twenty minutes. Never do that again. (But, wow, very cool.)

The JumpBox Cacti virtual appliance quickly and easily helped us with our network problem. Thanks JumpBox and thanks Chandler for quickly solving the problem.

And Chris likes to write in E-Prime, so keep it going.
